The new ‘Dawdles’ walks take place in July and August, leaving from the church cloisters in Kirkby Stephen market square once a week. The aim is to have a series of pleasant strolls in and around the town, in good company and gentle enough for all abilities. The walks will be just over an hour. For most there’s a suggested donation of £1 each to help cover costs.

In April 2009, Kirkby Stephen became the first town in Cumbria to be awarded Walkers are Welcome status. The national Walkers are Welcome scheme involves a long-term commitment to surveying local paths, establishing a new rights of way problem reporting system and improving facilities for walkers. Work also involves encouraging walkers to visit Kirkby Stephen and the beautiful surrounding countryside, wherever possible using public transport.
