7 miles in the high South Tyne valley 300m of ascent to Ashgill waterfall.
Walk the wood-fringed river and Pennine pastures along the valley bottom. Rising out of the village of Garrigill, past traditional hill farms and miners cottages, long views open out. Observe the influence of lead and silver mining and stone quarrying. Climb past the tumbling cascades of Ash Gill to its majestic waterfall. Low level return by the South Tyne gorge, call in at the George and Dragon (dog friendly) for festive refreshments.
Meet at Brampton Moot Hall for car share at 9.30 leave, or meet at 10.10 at Garrigill village green NY745415. Bring picnic and hot drink, waterproofs and suitable footwear. Paths are steep in places and can be slippery and uneven. Dogs on leads. Many stone stiles on this route, difficult for some dogs or walkers with restricted mobility.
